Best 10 ways to Fix registry errors in Windows 11/10

Debug Guide

In this post, I'll show you how to fix registry errors in Windows 11/10.

So I had problems with my registry and I was searching for solutions all over the internet.

I was searching for the best ways to fix registry errors in windows 11 easily.

I searched on YouTube, I searched on the Microsoft website and also on other websites.

I typed this exact term: fix registry errors in Windows 11-10

And I found the top 10 methods to fix Windows registry problems.

So I'll show you how you can follow the same methods in order to fix your registry errors.

But before that let's see the most common reasons for registry failure.

Common causes of registry errors:

  • Power Failure
  • Unexpected shutdown or boot
  • System Errors
  • Faulty Hardware
  • Corrupted files
  • Corrupted programs
  • Corrupted windows updates
  • Failed windows installations
  • Virus or Malware
  • Unknown failure

These are the most common causes but you will never know what is the exact reason for the registry failure.

So let's see how to fix Windows 10 registry errors.

Methods to fix corrupted & damaged registry:

  • Import registry backup
  • Automatic repair
  • System restore point
  • SFC and Dism scan
  • HardDisk scan
  • Registry repair tool
  • Malicious software removal tool
  • Virus and malware scan
  • Reinstall the windows
  • Reset your PC

You can perform any method you want but keep this in mind, methods 9 and 10 are crucial and will reset your PC.

So only apply them if none of the rest of the methods(1-8) worked.

Let's see each and every method in detail with step by step guide.

1. First take Registry backup

If you have already taken a backup of the registry then you can easily import that backup and fix your current problems.

But if the backup is too old then it will overlap with the current one clearing some values from the regedit.

So you need to have the latest backup, not like 2 years old backup.

These are the steps:

1. Search for the Regedit in the windows search box

2. Then click on the file option and then import

3. Now you need to select the location of that backup file

4. If you don't know if you have taken a backup or not, just go to the following path

(This is the default system path for regedit backup):

Skip this method if you don't have any backup in the above path

5. There will be a file with. reg extension, now just select the latest one and click on open.

It will import all the registry values and keys from that backup file.

This is just importing a backup of the registry to solve the Windows 10 registry errors, not like a very important or advanced method.

It is for those who have already taken a backup of the regedit.

But don't skip this step.

Just try it.

This might repair corrupted & damaged Registry in Windows 10/7/8/11

2. SFC and Dism scan to fix registry errors in windows 10/11

This method fixes system errors using a built-in Windows tool called system file checker (SFC).

SFC scan will search for the errors and problems in your Windows system and try to fix it automatically.

Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is a command-line tool used to prepare windows pre-installation environment image.

This method will delete corrupted and problematic files from your system eventually fixing registry errors too.

Don't worry it won't delete or uninstall anything from your PC except viruses and corrupted files.

You need to have an Internet connection because this is an advanced clean-up method to fix system errors.

1. Run CMD as an administrator

2. There are three commands in this method and you need to execute them one by one.

3. These are the commands:

SFC /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

4. This is a lengthy process so you need to have patience.

5. After performing about three commands/ operations, just restart your PC and you're done.

Don't close the CMD window while these operations are going on.

It will be useless at the end if you interrupt the process.

Just complete the cmd processes and this method may repair corrupted & damaged Registry in Windows PC.

3. HardDisk scan to fix registry errors in windows 11

As the name suggests, it will scan for the hard drive errors.

Hard drive errors unwillingly register false values in the registry editor causing system errors.

this will result in unusual behavior in Windows 10.

There are two methods you can use to perform a hard disk scan: using CMD commands and using a drive checker tool.

I will show you both of these methods and they are easy to perform so don't worry about it.

This will fix the corrupted registry in windows PC related to faulty registry entries due to hard drive errors.

Method 1:

1. Run CMD as an administrator

2. Now run the following command

chkdsk c: /f /r

3. Now just wait till it completes the scan

Here C is the drive that you want to scan.

You can change this letter according to drives.

For example, to scan the D drive, use the letter d (similar way for other drives).

Method 2:

1. Open This PC or right-click on the start button and select file explorer.

2. Right-click on the drive that you want to scan and go to properties

3. Then go-to tools.

4. Here you will see the error checking option, click on the check button.

5. Now click on scan drive and wait

If the errors are present in the selected drive, this tool will fix them automatically.

Note: You don't need to perform both methods because both are the same.

4.  Fix registry errors using Registry repair tool

This is by far the easiest and most common way to repair registry in windows 10/7/8/11.

This kind of tool knows how to scan for registry errors in windows 10 or any other PC.

You need to use third-party software to perform this method.

You can find many free registry repair tools online.

The best ones that I have found so far are free windows registry repair and wise registry cleaner.

I'm not promoting either of these.

I've used other software as well but these two are really well structured and simple.

Free windows registry repair

Wise registry cleaner

You can download both at once and use both simultaneously.

Both are free so don't worry about it.

I think this is the best method because you don't have to do anything in your windows system this software does everything that needs to be done.

5. MRT to fix registry errors easily

MRT stands for Malicious Software Removal Tool, which is a built-in tool in Windows 10 system.

It gets installed via windows updates automatically.

Just type MRT in the search box and you will see it.

If you don't have MRT in your system then you need to download it manually.

You need to download it according to your PC architecture whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit.

To check your PC architecture open the search box and type system information and open it.

Then you need to look for system type in that information tab.

If your PC is 32 bit, you will see the system type as X86.

If your PC is 64 bit, you will see the system type as X64.

This is a really helpful tool from Microsoft that removes suspicious corrupted and harmful files from your Windows 10 PC.

In short, it's antivirus software and malware cleaner apart from windows defender.

You can perform a quick scan, full scan, and custom scan same as all the other software available in the market do.

So if there is any malicious program running in the background that is causing the registry errors then it will be removed automatically using this MRT.

In short, it's a virus scan to fix corrupted registry in windows PC.

6. System restore point

A "system restore point" is a component of the windows recovery utility.

It saves whole windows data at a specific time whenever you choose to create a system restore point.

So this is a great opportunity to solve registry errors in windows 10/7/8/11 by using this method.

It's like repairing a windows system by using this saved checkpoint.

In a game, you have checkpoints where you can revert back to that position if you die.

This is the same thing with the windows system.

You can revert back to the restore point when it was created to restore windows data safely at that point.

1. Go to the search box and type create restore point and open that.

2. You will see the system restore button click on that.

3. Now windows will recommend you the safest and latest restore point.

4. Now click on next and then you will see information from where windows is going to extract the restore point

5. In the next tab you will see all the programs that are going to uninstall automatically.

Because at the time restore point was created, these programs were absent. They weren't installed at that time hence these will be deleted.

Now once you are done your PC will be restarted and windows will begin the system restore process.

Do not shut down your PC while the restore process is going on.

Your PC will boot normally once windows successfully restore all the data.

As your system is going to restore all the data where it was previously at the safest stage, your registry errors will also be fixed automatically.

But remember to install those programs you missed because of the system restore point.

7. Advance repair

This repair will directly fix all the system and registry errors all at once.

You need to have patience for this because it's going to reboot your PC into an automatic repair screen and then it will restart your PC after the scanning is done.

This will definitely fix all the registry errors safely without causing any other problems.

1. Go to settings

2. Then update and security

3. In the recovery tab, select Advanced startup then Restart now

4. You will see an advanced options menu, select Troubleshoot

5. In the next tab, select Automatic Repair

6. Now you may see a login screen, so just use the password and proceed.

Automatic repair should start after all these steps.

Now just wait until it completes the repair.

Your PC will be restarted after everything goes right.

So don't worry about it.

Just follow the process and it will repair the damaged registry in windows 10 PC.

8. Virus and malware scan

If you think any virus or harmful services are causing this issue then read this article:

This is the same as method 5 but uses proper antivirus and malware scanners.

There are many free virus and malware scanners available on the Internet.

You can use any of them.

I personally use Kaspersky total security.

And again I'm not promoting anything I'm just saying about software that I use on my PC.

Virus malware PUP's and other harmful programs are really dangerous and can cause system errors by altering the registry.

You can't recognize these harmful programs and software personally.

Not even the system detects it because they change the registry in such a way that system treat these harmful programs as normal programs.

I don't know how do they do it. I'm not a hacker or virus creator.

Anyway, just download the proper antivirus and scan your entire PC.

Because antivirus knows how to solve registry errors in windows 10 by removing unwanted and dangerous files.

9. Reinstall the windows

If all the above methods didn't work for you then you can just reinstall the windows so that it will freshly set everything to the default values in the registry editor.

This method will automatically set the default registry entries by the windows system.

Microsoft knows how to repair a corrupted registry in Windows PCs.

To reinstall Windows, you need to download the media creation tool from the Microsoft website.

Then install that setup and you will be prompted with the latest Windows 10 download options.

Now select all the information according to your PC and download the latest Windows 10 setup and install it.

Actually, you don't need to do anything media creation tool will download the setup automatically and install it on its own.

You just have to sit back and relax.

Don't close or shut down your PC if you are doing this method.

It will interrupt the system process and can damage your PC.

There is nothing to worry about, I'm just saying that don't shut down your PC if you choose to follow this method.

10. Reset your PC

Do you really need a description of this method?

I mean, everyone knows how to reset a PC and what will happen if you reset it.

If you are a complete newbie and don't know anything about resetting your PC then I suggest you watch videos on YouTube.

So you won't get confused and do anything wrong.

You can save your personal files while performing this method.

But remember that if you choose to reset your PC your data from the boot drive will be deleted (by default boot drive is C).

Because resetting will install the windows setup completely from the scratch.

So you need to re-install all the programs, apps, software, games, and other things that you have installed on your boot drive.

Method 9 and 10 are the last options you can do to fix Windows 10 registry errors.

Having registry errors in Windows PC is really annoying and frustrating because you don't know what to do exactly in order to fix them.

You cannot just enter into the registry editor and do whatever you want.

You need to follow specific methods and procedures.

You can easily fix registry errors in Windows 7/8/10 using the first 5-6 methods.

And once you fix your registry errors, just install any antivirus or antimalware software so that no harmful program will be installed automatically.

So just carefully read all the methods and you will know how to repair corrupted & damaged Registry in Windows 10/7/8/11.

Take care of your PC.
